My Weird Bible: Week 4 | Brent Cunningham

Series: WNC

February 04, 2026 | Brent Cunningham

Wednesday night community is back! Join us for My Weird Bible, 11 weeks on the passages that finally make sense.

My Weird Bible will explore some of the strangest, most confusing, and often misunderstood passages in Scripture. By digging into the historical, cultural, and biblical context behind these stories, the series helps make sense of what can feel weird or unsettling—and shows how even the most unusual parts of the Bible reveal God’s character and invite us into deeper faith.

Week 4: When Jesus Descended to the Dead Part 1: The Old Testament and the Afterlife

KEY TERMS:

SHEOL
Hebrew word for the underworld—the shadowy realm where ALL the dead went in the Old Testament, both righteous and wicked. Not heaven vs. hell, but simply "the place of the dead."

HADES
Greek equivalent of Sheol ("the unseen place"). New Testament term for the realm of the dead.

ABRAHAM'S BOSOM
The blessed part of Sheol/Hades where the righteous dead rested before Christ's resurrection. A place of comfort and peace (Lk 16:22-23).

THE ABYSS / TARTARUS
A special prison deep within the underworld reserved for a group of the rebellious sons of God (the "Watchers" from Gen 6). Separate from where human souls go       (2 Pet 2:4, Rev 9:1-11).

THE DESCENT
The doctrine that after Jesus died on the cross, He descended into Hades, proclaimed victory, and rescued the righteous dead who had been waiting for the Messiah (Acts 2:27, 1 Pet 3:19).

GEHENNA
The Valley of Hinnom outside Jerusalem where child sacrifice once occurred. Jesus’ term for the future place of eternal judgment (hell)—currently empty, reserved for the devil and his angels (Mt 25:41).
