My Weird Bible | Week 8 | Brent Cunningham

Series: WNC

March 04, 2026 | Brent Cunningham

Wednesday night community is back! Join us for My Weird Bible, 11 weeks on the passages that finally make sense.

My Weird Bible will explore some of the strangest, most confusing, and often misunderstood passages in Scripture. By digging into the historical, cultural, and biblical context behind these stories, the series helps make sense of what can feel weird or unsettling—and shows how even the most unusual parts of the Bible reveal God’s character and invite us into deeper faith.

KEY TERMS:

  • Bethel— Hebrew for "House of God." The place where Jacob saw the stairway to heaven. Jesus claims to be the new Bethel.
  • Sullam— The Hebrew word for Jacob's "ladder" — better translated stairway or ramp. The access point between heaven and earth.
  • Divine Council— The heavenly assembly of angelic beings who serve God as his royal court (Ps 82; Deut 32:8). The angels on the stairway are council members moving between realms — and Jesus claims to be the one around whom all of that activity orbits.
  • Son of Man— A loaded title from Daniel 7. Not just "a human being" — but a specific, divine-human figure who receives all authority and dominion from the Ancient of Days.
  • Cosmic Mountain— In ancient Near Eastern thought, the place where the divine realm and the earthly realm overlap. In the Bible: Eden, Sinai, Zion, the Temple — and ultimately, Jesus.
