My Weird Bible | Week 7 | Brent Cunningham

Series: WNC

February 22, 2026 | Brent Cunningham

Wednesday night community is back! Join us for My Weird Bible, 11 weeks on the passages that finally make sense.

My Weird Bible will explore some of the strangest, most confusing, and often misunderstood passages in Scripture. By digging into the historical, cultural, and biblical context behind these stories, the series helps make sense of what can feel weird or unsettling—and shows how even the most unusual parts of the Bible reveal God’s character and invite us into deeper faith.

Week 7: When Jesus Descended to the Dead Part 3: Hell: the Hardest Question about the Afterlife

SHEOL (HB) / HADES (GK) – The shadowy underworld, or realm of the dead, where all humans went (both wicked and righteous). Upon Jesus’ resurrection/ascension the righteous were rescued and taken to be with Jesus in heaven, and only the wicked remain, awaiting judgement.

GEHENNA – Greek word meaning "Valley of Hinnom"; Jesus' term for the place of final judgment (Mt 5:22, 10:28).

THE LAKE OF FIRE – Revelation's term for the final place of eternal judgment; same as Gehenna (Rev 20:14-15).

THE SECOND DEATH – Final, eternal separation from God after the final judgment (Rev 20:14).

ETERNAL CONSCIOUS TORMENT – Traditional view that the wicked suffer consciously forever in hell.

ANNIHILATIONISM – View that the wicked are destroyed and cease to exist (also called "conditional immortality").

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE – The final judgment where all the dead stand before God (Rev 20:11-15).
