My Weird Bible | Week 9 | Brent Cunningham

Series: WNC

March 11, 2026 | Brent Cunningham

Wednesday night community is back! Join us for My Weird Bible, 11 weeks on the passages that finally make sense.

My Weird Bible will explore some of the strangest, most confusing, and often misunderstood passages in Scripture. By digging into the historical, cultural, and biblical context behind these stories, the series helps make sense of what can feel weird or unsettling—and shows how even the most unusual parts of the Bible reveal God’s character and invite us into deeper faith.

“The Bible’s Hidden Map: Cosmic Geography”

 Helpful Vocabulary:

Cosmic Geography — The biblical idea that the nations of the world have been spiritually partitioned. According to Scripture, different territories have been under the influence of different spiritual powers — and all of history is God's story of reclaiming what was given away.

The Divine Council — The heavenly court of supernatural beings ("sons of God," or in Hebrew, bene Elohim) who serve under the authority of Yahweh. The Bible assumes their existence throughout the Old Testament. Yahweh is not one god among equals — he is the Most High God, and they serve beneath him.

Sons of God (bene Elohim) — A Hebrew phrase referring to supernatural beings in God's heavenly court, not human beings. Deut 32:8–9 uses this phrase to describe the beings God assigned to oversee the nations after Babel. Found in the Dead Sea Scrolls — and now reflected in modern translations like the ESV and NET.

Principalities and Powers — Paul's language in Eph 6 and Col 2 for the same supernatural beings. Real spiritual authorities operating behind human history, empires, and institutions — not metaphors for political systems.

Already / Not Yet — A key New Testament framework for understanding where we are in history. The decisive victory over the powers has already been won at the cross. But the full execution of that verdict is not yet complete. We live in the tension between the two.

Agents of Reclamation — Tonight's language for what every believer actually is. If the Cross was a cosmic power reversal and the Great Commission is the beginning of the reversal of Babel, then every person who follows Jesus — regardless of their role — is part of God's reclaiming what is His.

The Great Commission as Cosmic Geography — A way of reading Mt 28:18–20 through the lens of Deut 32. "All nations" (ethne) are the same nations disinherited at Babel and assigned to lesser spiritual powers. Jesus sends his people back to reclaim them — not by force, but through the proclamation of the gospel.
