Prayer & Fasting

Resources for Nourishing Lives

Return to The Well

The content below is intended to provide a variety of helpful resources on difficult yet relevant subjects, in this case, prayer and fasting. We recognize that some sources may come into question for any number of reasons, and the following are not offered with a blanket endorsement of every word spoken or written. We believe God uses imperfect people every day, and the following are just as fallible as anyone — yet if they may be helpful, we want to share them with you.

Overview

Prayer and fasting are often things we think need to look or sound a certain way. That our words need to be expressed with a kind of eloquence or dignity that sounds "good" to other people. That fasting has to be done one way, and one way only.

In reality, prayer is simply a conversation with God! It's about coming to the Lord in sickness and in health, at the top of the mountain and at the bottom of the valley — a daily habit to bring us closer to the heart of Jesus. Fasting is looking towards the Lord, giving something up you know you will miss, and turning towards God in those times of longing for the very thing you're fasting from. We hope the resources below bring you a new understanding of prayer and fasting and help you grow in your relationship with God.

Pastoral Messages

In Mark Chapter 2, the people questioned Jesus about fasting and we still have questions about fasting today. Why would I do it? Do people still do that? Is fasting just for the super Christians? In this message, Pastor Josh McGinley discusses the importance and the power found in spiritual disciplines and how they can lead us into a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus. You can watch Pastor Josh's message by clicking here.

Pastor Donny Abbott teaches on the different ways your walk with God can reflect how God hardwired you to be. In this message, Pastor Brent teaches on ascetics, who want nothing more than to be left alone in prayer.
