Resources for Nourishing Lives

Return to The Well

The content below is intended to provide a variety of helpful resources on difficult yet relevant subjects, in this case, depression. We recognize that some sources may come into question for any number of reasons, and the following are not offered with a blanket endorsement of every word spoken or written. We believe God uses imperfect people every day, and the following are just as fallible as anyone — yet if they may be helpful, we want to share them with you.

Overview

Depression can manifest in a variety of forms. According to the Mayo Clinic, depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.*

Depression can also arise in seasons of hardship, grief, or anxiety. You may experience a season of mild or undiagnosed depression, but it no less imposes a weighty burden where support is needed.

Pastoral Messages

Pastoral Messages

We live in a time where it’s so easy to become trapped in unhealthy thought patterns and habits. In this intimate teaching, “Resetting Our Minds,” Pastor Jeff Lucas helps shine a light on the importance of identifying those well-worn pathways/default settings in our minds and how God is calling us to intentionality and promises us His help as we choose well. There is much that we can learn from this relevant message by clicking here.

In this message, Pastor Jeff Lucas turns our attention to one of the great heroes of the Old Testament – Elijah. We see in this story that sometimes in life, the journey may feel like too much. Elijah had just experienced the tremendous power of God displayed to his enemies, yet as circumstances shifted he became overwhelmed by depression. There is much that we can learn from this relevant message by clicking here.

From our Windsor campus, Pastor Dick Foth examines the encounter Elijah had with overwhelming depression. We find that even when the journey is too much, it is not too much for the Spirit that resides within us. Pastor Foth highlights the fact that God meets us where we are — no matter where we are. To view this message, simply click here.

Pastor Dary Northrop addresses the deep struggles of Judas in his message Mirror Mirror: Silver to Silver. This subject can be tender, as many have experienced emotions leading to suicidal thoughts, or perhaps have been directly impacted by suicide. In the midst of Judas’ story, we cling to the hope we have in the gospel. Whatever we face tomorrow, we are not alone and our hope is firm in Christ. His mercies are new every morning! You can view this message by clicking here.

In his message, The God Who Invites You to Wrestle, Pastor Brent Cunningham explores Psalm 13, a prayer of lament. We learn that in disorienting seasons of life, God not only gives us permission, but compulsion to bring our anger, pain, and sadness to Him, and wrestle with Him honestly. We’ll see how we can maintain faith amidst feelings of abandonment and doubt. You can view this relevant message by clicking here.

In his powerful and relevant message and book, Faith in the Fog, Pastor Jeff Lucas explores the concept of exercising faith amidst trial and even perceived silence from God. Depression is not a foreign concept in scripture, and our God is an expert in meeting people in their moments of fog. You can listen to Jeff discussing the concept of Faith in the Fog in an interview by clicking here.

Books, Articles & Podcasts

Books, Articles & Podcast

Book: Singing in Babylon by Jeff Lucas. Everyone has to live with second choices—events and circumstances that they would not choose, some trivial, some tragic. Daniel was a man whose life was filled with second choices, but he did more than just survive; he stayed faithful to God and thrived. Down-to-earth but inspirational, Singing in Babylon explores how the reader, like Daniel, can find purpose and meaning in life’s second choices. Available in print and digital formats here.

Book: Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church by N. T. Wright. Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation—and if this has already begun in Jesus’s resurrection—the church cannot stop at "saving souls" but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for God’s kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life. Available in print, digital, and audio formats here.
