The Holy Spirit

by Leigh Ann Dilley on February 23, 2026

How often do you think about the Holy Spirit? Specifically, how often do you think about the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:19 is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. It says “I pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe in him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms”.

To put this in perspective, let’s back up a bit, Paul was telling the Ephesians he prays for them to receive spiritual wisdom and insight. He wants them to grow in the knowledge of God, not just knowledge about God. Paul wants them to get to know God through a personal relationship. Paul prays their hearts would be flooded with light and they would understand the confident hope we have as God’s holy people.

So, how do we grow our knowledge of God, so we understand this incredible greatness of His power? We gain knowledge of God like we would gain knowledge of anyone else. Spend time with God. Talk to Him, in prayer. Invite Him into your circumstances, to do life with you. Reading God’s word is great, but personal knowledge and trust in someone grows stronger through shared experiences. If we meet with God regularly in prayer and ask Him for wisdom and direction, then the next logical step is to trust Him to act and to wait, expectantly for it. If we pay attention, overtime, God will earn our trust through answered prayers. That is one way God shows us He loves and cares for us. Confident hope in God grows and becomes a reality, when we know and trust Him.

After Paul prays for spiritual wisdom for the Ephesians, he prays for spiritual growth. As our experience with God’s unfailing love and faithfulness grows, our love and confidence in Him grows. We become deeply rooted in Him and He will keep us strong. God’s love covers us through all of lives experiences, for our lifetime and beyond, during times of celebration and during times of despair. (Ephes. 3:17, paraphrased) You can never lose God’s love. God’s love is made complete in us through the union of Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit, which the Bible describes as the “fullness of God”.

At this point, we have come full circle so let’s refer again to Ephesians 1:19 at the beginning of this devotional. As we live within this incredible greatness of God’s power, Paul says to give all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think!

Where do you need the incredible greatness of God’s mighty power?
