Victim Advocate Volunteer
Adult, NoCo Community
Fort Collins
The Victim Response Team responds to victims throughout Larimer County 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The VRT responds and provides crisis intervention and assures that victim(s) are aware of their legal rights. Advocates provide emotional support and empathy to crime victims in Larimer County and offer referrals and resources to victims and families.
Volunteer victim advocates should be willing to take on 4 to 6 shifts per month, each lasting 12 hours—either 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. While this is a significant time commitment, it reflects the critical, on-call nature of advocacy work.
At the heart of the role is a deep compassion for people who have experienced violence, abuse, or other forms of trauma. Advocates must be driven by a desire to support and empower survivors, helping them regain control over their lives and make informed choices.
A volunteer victim advocate needs a combination of interpersonal and practical skills to effectively support individuals in crisis.
A volunteer must be able to work on-call, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays and be able to provide his/her own transportation and have appropriate vehicle insurance. Advocates must have an open, non-judgmental attitude towards victims/survivors and the ability to communicate well, problem solve, and respond quickly are some of the essential qualifications, in addition being able to cope with emotional and stressful situations. Advocates must complete initial training and attend a monthly VRT meeting and make at least a 1-year commitment to the program. Must complete a series of steps including an oral board and background check.
