Timberline Church | Kaleidoscope: The Raising of Lazarus | Aaron Hanson

Series: Kaleidoscope

March 15, 2026 | Aaron Hanson

The raising of Lazarus is the climactic sign in John’s Gospel, revealing Jesus’ authority not only over sickness or circumstance but over death itself. When Jesus delays after hearing Lazarus is sick, it seems confusing and even painful to those who love him, yet the moment becomes an opportunity to reveal a deeper truth. Speaking to Martha in the midst of grief, Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life,” reminding us that sorrow and hope can exist together and that true life is found in Him.

Standing at the tomb, Jesus weeps with those who mourn and then calls Lazarus back to life, showing His power over the very thing that terrifies humanity most. Yet this miracle also sets the stage for the cross, as raising Lazarus ultimately leads to the plot to kill Jesus. The sign points beyond itself to the greater reality that Jesus came not just to perform miracles, but to confront death itself and bring resurrection life to the world.
